Here is a list of roses that I'm delighted with, and would recommend to anybody. There will be more added to the list as time goes on. There are so many wonderful landscape roses that are also fragrant, so don't settle just for the lovely, but ubiquitous knockout variety that is scentless. I have that one too, but there are so many roses with more sizes, shapes, smells, and colors! Spring and Fall are the best times in Texas to look at roses. They really kick into bloom at those times when the days are warm and the nights are cool.
I buy my roses from Chamblee's Roses in Tyler, Texas. I love the Chamblee's Roses company. I buy roses from them in one gallon pots, and although they are small, they have a fully developed root system and grow really fast. You can go to their website and check them out for yourself.
Taylor is also blessed to have Ray Ponton, and Robert Stiba, two local rose growers in the Taylor area who grow antique roses from cuttings on their own roots. These special people also hybridize their own roses! They often have roses for sale, and would be happy to answer questions you might have about growing roses. Feel free to contact them. Their telephone numbers are in the Taylor telephone directory.
Come look at the roses at Hummingbird Hill and pick out what you like. The roses are own-root roses. This means that they are not grafted, but grow on their own roots. Own root roses are a whole other animal than the grafted kind. You'll be amazed at how fast they grow into large hardy shrubs.
